The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting loose diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to various locations nearby or even different countries to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you follow along as we discuss the various factors in gemstone collecting.

First off you'll need the knowledge on each of the gemstones out there. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

The first item to take into account will be the color of the gemstone. You'll want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. This means blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet. The prices for very pale or very dark semiprecious and precious gemstones are lower than the vibrant colors.

Gemstone cut is very important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A precision cut will highlight the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way of determining the excellence of the cut of the stone is to consider if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level throughout its surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away instead of reflecting inside the gemstone. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

The next factor to consider is the clarity of the gemstone. This means the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal structure. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different prices as well. This is due to the difference in relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types when it comes to gemstones. You can collect gemstones like Agate, Agate or Axinite for instance. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In New Hampshire you can rock hunt for Beryl, Rock Crystal and Garnet.
