To start off right you need to read up on the various gemstones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what you're buying and prevent you from making mistakes. This will help you make informed decisions.
Color is a very important part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its purer spectral value the more highly prized it is. Traditional spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that are paler or darker than the pure color are considered a lower value.
The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors into appraisal of diamonds along with gemstones. A precision cut gemstone showcases the pure color of the stone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision in the cut is to look at how well and consistent it reflects light over its entire surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting internally. Gemstone color will be washed out.
The clarity in a stone is the next item to consider. Clarity refers to a stones relative freedom from inclusions or blemishes. The gemstone without flaws is more valuable. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a 10X gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will get an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.
Next comes size and weight. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. Be aware however, that weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.
Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and could be rewarding as well over time. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting gemstones. The weight of a diamond is measured in carats (ct.). Each carat is divided into

weight may vary from .44 to .56 points and still be considered a 1/2 carat.
