Why I Like Gemstones

Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to visit different local areas to look for raw gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If you have an interest in this hobby then follow along as we reveal the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to understand as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You need to be as informed as possible.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer a color is to its purer spectral value the more highly prized it is. Traditional spectral colors include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Colors that tend to be paler or darker than the pure spectral color are considered a lower value.

How the gemstone has been cut is the second most important value determination to look at before a purchase is made. How precise the cut is will determine how much light the stone will reflect. It will fully ultimately determine the stones brilliance and its final value.

The next factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This refers to the purity of the stone or the absence of internal inclusions, particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different in prices as well. This is due to the difference in relative density or specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is such a variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Agate, Sapphire or Tourmaline for instance. The varieties are nearly endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Just in the United States in Michigan you can find Agate, Chlorastrolite and Hematite.
